Founder’s Statement

My name is Pete Bird.  My story is unremarkable.  Which I came to realize is, sadly, quite remarkable. 

I knew I had a problem with alcohol for years.  But despite it, I was successful.  How could I have had a serious problem?  I denied it.  I rationalized it.  I tried to hide it.  Until I couldn’t.  Then I got help.  The more people I talked with in recovery, the more I realized how common this pattern is.  And the more I heard the refrain: “I just wish I had started treatment sooner.”

I created Box Now in hopes of contributing in some way to reducing stigma and accelerating help for people with addiction in general and Alcohol Use Disorder in particular. 

I am also very pleased to add my story to the many others who are sharing theirs as part of the UnshameNC campaign to end the stigma surrounding substance use disorder.

Meaning
“Box”:
Formula 1 slang
noun: the drivers’ servicing area in the pit lane
verb: make a pit stop, as in “box this lap...box now”

Design

• Invokes Formula 1 bold red and black colors
• The underline design is meant to suggest the effect of a pit-stop on lap speeds:
  • As tires degrade, lap speed decreases
  • During the pit lap, average pace takes a significant dip
  • When the car returns to the track, generally average lap speed increases on the fresh tires
• Often, quality of life and general fulfillment for people with AUD follow a similar trajectory before, during and after getting help
